The Alzheimer's Association estimates that there are more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's in 2013. There are 15.5 million caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, providing over 17.7 billion hours of unpaid care in 2013, valued at more that $220 billion. Among the many challenges of caregivers is adapting to their loved one's decline in communicative abilities. My goal as a Communication Disorders Master's candidate who has personally experienced the impact of dementia on a family is to create an online caregiver resource that will serve as a self-guided communication training program for those caring for a loved one with dementia.
